Georgia -

I just tried to do this and it didn't work so I am trying again - i apologize if this posts twice. The diet is based on the premise that autistic people lack to abiltiy to break down some or all of the protein found in grains ( gluten) and diary ( casein). Rather than being processed by the body, it enters the bloodstream and thus eventually enters the brain where it has an opiate effect. So, in order to eliminate the "drugged" effect on the brain you need to eliminate the proteins from your diet. Now, there are some hard points to this diet - it only works if you take out 100% of the proteins - 99% doesn't count because the 1 % that is left will continue to cause the effects. And, eating out is all but impossible. But, once you get past that you are off and running. I make almost all of my son;s food from scratch - first of all I find it tastes better than any of the prepackaged gluten free/ csein free foods and second, in addition to the GFCF thing he has a LOT of other food allergies - and to make sure all of those are addressed I cook all of his food.
Sometimes it takes a while to see results - basically the brin needs to go through a detox period. It took 4 months before my son showed improvement but now the results are dramatic. Last week my husband un nowingly was cooking his waffles in the same toaster as the rest of our stuff. Even that little bit of crumbs from the toaster was enough to bring on the autistic symptoms that we ususally do not see - hand flapping and strong echolalci speech. Two days without using the gluten tainted toaster and my son was toally back ! It is a huge and dramatic improvement - but it takes a lot of time and effort to do. As a note, gluten is in everything from food to shampoo to soap to laundry detergent. So, before you start this diet you need to make sure all the things areound him are gluten free as well. There is a great website that details the diet and more: www.gfcfdiet.com. Check it out and let me know if you have any questions. Tell your mom I wish her luck - and if there is anything else she would like to know, please tell her to drop me a line.
Have a safe trip home

Hey Kim! I'm glad to see you're still here! I imagine everyone's been pretty busy since the summer hit so that's probably why the site died down. I hope that yours is going well. At the moment I'm still in Switzerland, but on Tuesday my boyfriend and I are leaving to go to my home in MY for 2 months and work a bit. Unfortunately I found out from my mother today that Jonathan (my AS brother) has been acting up more than usual lately. I goes maybe it's just an Aspie thing, but he started beating other kids up in school and when the teacher asked him why he did it, he said that his brain was telling him to! To think of him saying that makes me smile, but of course it's not the way he should be acting!! A couple of years ago w caught him throwing toothbrushes and toothpaste out of the window! When my mother asked him why he said "because they want to be free!" It makes me laugh even now to think of it, but at the same time it's a little bit scary! Anyway- I'm glad that you wrote and I would love to send you a copy of the research I did just as soon as I've "tweaked" it enough to sound the way I want it to.... I hope you and all of the other women have a great summer. Once I get to NY I don't know how often I'll be able log into the pc, but I'll do my best to keep in touch with anyone who's interested. I'll also try to keep a sprt of up date on the goings on in the wonderful world of Jon!

Hope everyone has a great vacation!
